MSC Update - October 2023
It is officially fall in Texas, which means the relief of 80-degree weather. In the academic medical community, it is also the beginning of match season. Congratulations to all the fourth-year medical students who submitted residency applications and have started their interview journey! The TCEP MSC has been busy with multiple virtual events to assist residency applicants. We hosted 14 “Meet the Program” events on Zoom, where students both in and out of state could learn more about the emergency medicine residency programs Texas has to offer. From El Paso to Lubbock to Dallas-Fort Worth, students had one-on-one time with program leadership at these events. In addition, we just hosted our annual medical student colloquium, a virtual conference with lectures applicable for first to fourth year medical students. We kicked off the event with our keynote speaker Dr. Heidi Knowles, current ACEP representative to the Federation of State Medical Boards and previous TCEP president. She inspired our students to get involved with advocacy work early in their medical careers. We had 10 lectures from faculty across the state and concluded with a program director panel. Our students learned about “Dos and Don’ts for virtual interviewing” and “The Ted Lasso approach to battling burnout in the ED.” The MSC wants to thank everyone who could make this incredible event happen. We look forward to continuing to improve on this programming in years to come. If you missed any of the lectures, the recording will be posted on the TCEP website soon! It is not too late to get involved with the TCEP MSC. Our advocacy committee will start hosting meetings this fall, and we are always looking for different student and resident perspectives to join. We also encourage you to save the date for TCEP Connect – student programming will be held Saturday, April 20. Connect is an in-person conference that will be hosted at Margaritaville in Lake Conroe, TX. We hope to see you there!
