2025 ACEP Council Meeting
This year’s annual ACEP Council meeting was held in Salt Lake City, Utah, on September 5-6. The Council meeting always meets for two days before the ACEP Annual Meeting. This year, there were about 460 councilors from all state chapters, sections of ACEP, EMRA (Emergency Medicine Residents Association), SAEM (Society of Academic Emergency Medicine, and CORD (Council of Residency Directors). Texas brought 21 councilors and was one of the largest state chapters represented. This year, there were ninety-one (91) resolutions to discuss and vote on. About twenty (20) of these were memorial or commendation resolutions. Among the memorial resolutions was recognition of TCEP members Dr. Don Gordon of San Antonio and Dr. Elizabeth Jones of Houston. In addition to considering and voting on resolutions, an important part of the Council meeting is election of four (4) members of the Board of Directors (four run each year, with the possibility of holding up to two terms of three (3) years each) and the president-elect. Every other year, the Council also elects a speaker and vice-speaker, which occurred this year. Elected to the board this year were Drs. Dan Freess (CT), Steve Kailes (FL), Kristin McCabe-Kline (SC) (incumbent), and Bing Pao (CA). The president-elect is Dr. Ryan Stanton (KY). The speaker is Dr. Michael McCrea (OH) and vice speaker is Dr. Larisa Traill (MI). With so many resolutions to consider, many issues were discussed, and many passed. Examples include support for eliminating physician non-compete clauses in contracts, support for both three-year and four-year residency programs (opposed to changing all to four years), and providing a toolkit for elective surgery scheduling to mitigate ED crowding. I can email you a synopsis of all the resolutions and their pending outcomes if you contact me. The Texas councilors in attendance this year were: Drs. Sara Andrabi, Jessica Best, Angela Cornelius, Bryan Dunn, Hilary Fairbrother, Diana Fite, Robert Greenberg, Robert Hancock, Doug Jeffrey, A.J. Kirk, Ira Nemeth, Heather Owen, Lynn Rea, Marcus Sims, Gerad Troutman, and Sandra Williams. We had five (5) alternate councilors who stepped in for councilors who could not attend: Drs. Ben Leeson, Kim Leeson, Laura Medford-Davis, Michael Parsa, and Theresa Tran. We also had several additional alternate councilors in attendance: Drs. Trisha Anest, Carrie de Moor, Justin Hacnik, Craig Meek, Clark Azubuike, Geovonni Bell, Adriana Cordova, Pavitra Krishnamani, and Ariel Noble. Drs. Angela Gardner and Bob Suter sat with our delegation as past presidents of ACEP. This gives them a forever seat in the Council, although they do not have a vote. Our councilors – half of whom are elected ever year at the TCEP Annual Meeting – and our alternate councilors – who - are appointed by our board of directors – pay their own way, including hotel accommodations and airfare, to attend the Council meeting. There is no reimbursement from TCEP. If you get the opportunity, please thank these physicians for all the time and money they dedicate to attending the Council meeting, not to mention additional meetings in preparation and time spent studying the resolutions in advance. The next Council meeting will be October 3-4, 2026, in Chicago, IL. Please feel free to e-mail me ([email protected]) or call/text me (713-301-3564) if you wish to discuss this report.
